Curriculum & Instruction

Greetings from Morris Arrington, Deputy Superintendent:

The Curriculum and Instruction Department serves as a vital role in the life of the school district. The goal of the department is to increase the academic achievement of all learners. Working to ensure quality teaching and increased student learning is also another goal of the Curriculum and Instruction Department along with the implementation of the South Carolina Curriculum.

Professional learning is a major key in providing all teachers meaningful, productive, collaborative experiences. Professional learning opportunities have been embedded into the teacher’s school year and especially during the six days of staff development on early dismissal days for students.  Also, professional learning is planned at the beginning and end of the school year.  The Office of Curriculum and Instruction coordinates both district-level and school- level sessions of staff development.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, the following are topics of implementation from the district office:

  • Implementation of the South Carolina Curriculum Project
  • Vertical articulation of curriculum pacing guides
  • Differentiation of Instruction
  • Implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI)
  • Creating and Monitoring Standard-Based Classrooms
  • Writing Across the Curriculum
  • Creating Effective Formative and Summative Assessments
  • Data Analysis
  • Utilization of Research-based programs for student achievement
